Can you share with us some design highlights of the recently completed Alibaba Beijing Chaoyang Science & Technology Park? How did you and your team address some of the challenges in terms of project scheduling and details?

Eric: Our relationship with Alibaba dates back to over a decade and includes multiple projects in numerous cities across mainland China. Alibaba consistently looks to their office developments as an opportunity to provide exceptional environments for their staff to thrive and innovate.

In Beijing, we were faced with the challenge to design a very large, interconnected campus facility that spanned across three separate parcels of land, individually divided by multilane city streets. Leveraging our history and our knowledge of Alibaba culture, we knew it was important to focus on connecting people and providing diverse workplace environments. Using this knowledge and focusing specifically on the unique environmental factors in Beijing, our ideas centered on a series of dynamic atriums to link multiple buildings and their respective business units across the campus, while also providing “centers of energy” that would activate and animate Alibaba’s business culture of collaboration and innovation.

The large skylights above these atriums were the most complicated design elements during detail design and construction phases. We are happy that all the design issues such as glass module, external shading, structure profile, and skylight maintenance system finally come into one comprehensive solution which allows atrium activities happening in all seasons.

Now that the buildings are open and the Alibaba teams are activating the spaces in unique ways, we feel good about how our ideas are fulfilling a design vision. At NBBJ, we stive to ensure that our buildings are not only beautiful but just as important, they provide a framework for business and human performance to thrive.

The Alibaba Beijing Chaoyang Science & Technology Park witnessed a joint collaboration between NBBJ and BIAD. Can you tell us how the working experience was like with this partnership?

Eric: Similar to our relationship with Alibaba, our relationship with BIAD dates back over a decade with multiple office development projects. When I first moved to China in 2008, one of my first projects was the Microsoft R&D facility in Beijing. BIAD collaborated with us on that project with great success.

During Alibaba Beijing design phases, BIAD as usual diligently worked on detail executions, government expert reviews as well as overall construction cost control. Today, after completing Alibaba Beijing, I can say that BIAD consistently provides the expertise and local knowledge required to deliver quality at an optimal size and speed.

We know that NBBJ has a long working relationship with technology companies in China. Some recent NBBJ projects in China in this field include Tencent Headquarters Seafront Towers, Tencent DCW Net City, Alibaba Xixi Campus Phase 4, and vivo Smartphone Headquarters. Compared with working with American counterparts like Google and Amazon, what are the differences you can see when designing a headquarters project in China? Are there any design needs that differ the China-based technology companies from the others?

Eric: When I first moved to China, there was a consistent desire from corporations and their leadership groups to understand what was happening in the US and to then discuss how those ideas might be integrated into their project. Today, we see China’s top tech companies no longer looking to the US for inspiration but rather defining clear expectations for their teams, their culture and their business success. This evolution in thinking, like many things in China, happened fast and it was a special privilege to be a part of that evolution with clients like Alibaba, Tencent and many others.

Thinking beyond the East and West influences, I would say the most unique aspect in China is the scale and speed of design projects. While there are many firms in the US who provide design services to corporate tech clients, there are very few firms who have the expertise and skills to design at the scale and speed required in China. Our team of experts at NBBJ, throughout our long history of work in China, has grown to anticipate and respond to these critical requirements.

Delivering great projects without losing the quality of ideas or the quality of the outcome is critical to our legacy in China. Designing projects with China’s biggest technology companies provide us a unique lane to thrive in this environment. For me personally, I am proud to play a role in NBBJ’s success as well as the success of our clients.

The projects you mentioned are all great examples on the evolution in thinking. I’ll focus on the Tencent ones though.

At roughly the size and shape of Midtown Manhattan, the Tencent DCW Net City is envisioned to be China’s first interconnected district with office buildings, residential areas as well as public entertainment venues, parks and a waterfront. Modern cities around the world are organized around automobiles, not people. But Tencent Net City is different. It places the needs of people and the environment before cars, resulting in an interconnected, organic ecosystem that paves the way for future cities.

As you can see, we are not planning and designing to look at the West—our ethos is about creating new and inspiring environments for a shared future.

Another example in this vein is the Tencent Headquarters Seafront Towers. The design re-envisions what the future skyscraper could look like and how it could function, not just for Tencent employees, but for workers everywhere.

Maximizing a tight urban site, the design concept splits a single high-rise into a pair of towers, one 50 stories and the other 39 stories, linking them together with three horizontal “skystreets” or links. These links represent culture, health and knowledge in response to specific client needs, and incorporate connective elements throughout, from community areas, green spaces and fitness amenities.

As a Partner of NBBJ, you’ve led a variety of great projects, such as Alibaba Xixi Campus Phase 4, Gemdale Lane, North Bund AIA Tower, are there anything in common when designing those projects that can be helpful to inform and inspire other projects?

Eric: At NBBJ, we are dedicated to designing environments that positively impact lives—“We design for life.” This idea is consistently manifested in how our teams envision design outcomes focused on health, community and sustainability. We believe buildings can make people healthy and happy. We believe communities are connected through design. We believe design decisions—both big and small—create a sustainable future. Overarching drivers such as these not only help our teams across the globe come together but they also enable our clients to create lasting change and impact through their built environments.

Take the Alibaba Xixi Campus Phase 4 as an example. The award-winning project is comprised of big and small hexagon-shaped cells in the planning and design to enhance connectivity. After entering the campus, employees can choose to bike or walk to their destinations. Shared spaces on the ground floor provide strong east and west connections to encourage employee moving between courtyards. Each workstation is 60 seconds or less from outdoor green spaces, including rooftop gardens and terraces.

Being environmentally responsible, the campus is designed to adopt multiple sustainable strategies such as rain waiter collection, access to nature and daylight, natural ventilation, and mechanical façade shading from sunshine and glare. Each of these strategies contribute to a healthier working environment, and also help our client pursue health, community and a zero-carbon future.

How do you think of the type of requests from clients for building icons?

Eric: It is very important to acknowledge that the word ‘icon’ can have many interpretations. Our response to client needs for the project to be iconic is usually to start with a series of questions that help us to understand why this is required.

By asking why, we shift the conversation from a traditionally subjective formal representation to a goal-based understanding of what the project means to the companies’ trajectory of growth and success. Once our discussions are fueled by how a project can empower the organization’s goals and mission, we move quickly into a deeper understanding of how we can impact the client’s success. I believe that as an architect who is dedicated to both the beauty (art) and the performance (science) of the built environment, it is imperative to understand my clients business and their success metrics at a deep level. It is only through this understanding that design can be transformative and impactful.

When you complete a project, do you pay attention to what viewers say about it?

Eric: This is an interesting question, especially in the context of China’s modern urban culture. Thank you for asking. While this question could take substantial time to discuss in detail, I will keep it simple. The short answer is yes, I listen and then I evaluate, learn  and grow. I believe that the desire and willingness to learn is especially important as a foreigner practicing in China. A part of an architect’s job is to push boundaries and to ask provocative questions. It is important that we push ideas to a point of being controversial. When you do this, you will inevitably run into criticism. If we are not pushing ideas to a point where others question them, we are not fulling our role in urban society as artists of change.

Regarding use of materials, which aspects do you usually focus on? What drives your decisions on material selection?

Eric: Our decisions of material selection are driven by a commitment to reducing environmental impact, enhancing occupant health, and supporting sustainability. By integrating these principles, we aim to create buildings that are not only functional and beautiful but also environmentally responsible and beneficial to the communities they serve. Most recently, when it aligns within the China building code, we have focused on leading clients to build with prefabricated wood structures. Currently, the China building code will only allow small structures, but we are optimistic that like the US and the UK, the construction technique will be adopted for larger structures in the future.

NBBJ has been partnered with scientists in neuroscience, social and behavioral sciences to explore on how to inform architecture with science research findings. So is there any recent successful examples you want to share with us in this regard?

Eric: NBBJ has a Fellowship Program with Dr. John Medina, a developmental molecular biologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a New York Times best-selling author. The fellowship explores the links between the cognitive neurosciences and the built environment. It seeks to advance the science of design by using peer-reviewed brain research to enhance organizational performance and the human experience.

Throughout our years of working with Dr. John Medina, our global design team has cultivated the significance of cognitive health in design, and our projects have continuously benefited from the latest research findings of this program.

For instance, one of the latest results is the “Delight Factor” —a new metric that quantifies the competitive strength of a workplace. We ‘ve identified critical factors for executive function, psychological safety, creativity, team function and sense of belonging. We then establish four preliminary ways that buildings contribute to achieving these key components of performance. When coordinated together, they offer a powerful evaluation of a workplace’s Delight Factors—nature, daylight, variety and socialization. The Wellness Workplace is a great example.

We learnt that you lived and worked in Shanghai for about 12 years. During this period, what’s your observations in the changes of Chinese people’s social behavior pattern, the local culture of Shanghai, and the cityscape in China in general?

Eric: There are so many things that I could note as an answer to this question. I will focus on the cityscape as it is directly related to my personal passions and NBBJ’s primary business. While in living in Shanghai, I had the benefit of living on the fourty-sixth floor of a residential tower near LuJiaZui. While living above the 100-meter height line, with direct proximity to one of China’s premier business district and the HuangPu River, my perspective on the city was unique and inspiring. It was a bustling, constantly evolving urban center: there were towers that rose up toward the horizon as far as I could see and multiple city parks developed along the river. The city grew at a staggering rate but more importantly there was a focus on daily urban experiences where health and community thrived. Watching this transformation was inspiring and will forever influence my perspective on architecture and urban design.

An NBBJ project that exemplifies the evolution of Shanghai’s city park network is the Shanghai Bund Project. The project serves as a very special connection between the city and NBBJ. In 2008, we master-planned the 1.8-kilometer-long boulevard along the west bank of the HuangPu River. This effort launched the next generation of the Shanghai Bund, helping to revitalize and reshape the riverfront into one of today’s most popular destinations. As a result of our masterplan and urban design strategies, there is a renewed relationship between the dense city grid and the riverside park system. With a focus on enhancing pedestrian experiences, we were able to transform one of the oldest parts of the city into a public space where community connections thrive!

Are there any new changes or movements you are currently seeing in the architecture industry? How do you think of the changes that AI and 3D modeling (such as Rhino) bring to the industry?

Eric: The design and construction industry, while slower to adapt cutting edge technologies, has always been an industry in constant change. Design tools change, like Rhino, and most recently AI, will continue to be tools that we leverage in our workflow.

I would say that I am personally the most excited about the movement in the industry to expand and develop prefabrication tools and techniques. These technologies provide substantially expanded opportunities to reduce the amount of carbon embodied in the materials and processes of construction. AI is interesting and challenges us to think differently. However, prefabrication techniques have the ability to have substantial and tangible benefits to our cities and the people who live, work, learn and play in them.

As a regular traveler for work and leisure, which architecture do you like most? What design features that make it the best one on your personal list?

Eric: Personally, I am very excited and inspired when I see architecture and interior design that strategically integrates biophilia and biophilic philosophies. Simply defined, biophilia is humanity’s innate tendency to be drawn to nature. To design for biophilia is to push the boundaries between indoor and outdoor with a specific focus on giving users heightened access to nature. There are currently extremely influential design projects going up around the world that strategically integrate nature into the built environment in powerful and inspiring ways.

At NBBJ, we have been fortunate to work with clients who understand the power of biophilia and to enable us to push the boundaries of what is next. From our work with Alibaba in Beijing and Hangzhou to our work with Amazon in Seattle, we are among a group of design firms intent on redefining the relationship of nature and buildings. We are very hopeful that our efforts will inspire the next generation to think differently about buildings and the city.

As an architect with deep experience in Asia and north America, how do you see the current architecture industry?

Eric: Overall, the design and construction industry is challenged across all of North America and Asia. The pandemic impacted businesses and governments across the globe. While we are officially out of the pandemic, the impacts will be felt for years to come. However, I remain extremely optimistic that the work of architects, designers and urban planners will continue to be extremely impactful in building healthy, sustainable cities where communities flourish!
